For me, nothing feels more like home than a cup of tea. Both energising and calming, I start every morning with a cuppa and come home to unwind with one too. Tea has so many amazing qualities – it soothes and reassures, opens conversation and invokes happy memories. Much like people and the places they live, tea reflects many different characters and personalities – it can be prim and proper, intriguing and exotic, organic and earthy or relaxed and uncomplicated.
Growing up on a farm, I remember family gatherings in my Italian grandmother’s country kitchen with lots of tea and laughter. While some Italians would never consider anything but ‘caffe’, my nonna has always loved a ‘tazza di te’ and a good story told in her one-of-a-kind blend of Italian, broken English and words of her own invention. Transcending language and culture, tea brought us together.
Today, home is Melbourne. Having bought a small inner city apartment, I’ve set about on a journey to create a place that feels warm, welcoming, and me. Slowly adding to each room piece by piece, I try to surround myself with things I love.
The feeling of home and a love of tea are the inspiration behind Tea Mattina. Here you’ll find a mix of tea tastings, homewares, interiors and stories of precious things collected along the way – all with a dash of Italian flavour thrown in (grazie Nonna !).
